Gilsonite Natural Asphalt

High Quality Natural Asphalt for Modifying Bitumen

Natural asphalt has traditionally been used to replace some of the bitumen content in an asphalt mix and improve the overall surface performance and deformation resistance. Gilsonite is a 99.9% pure hydrocarbon resin, mined in the Uintah basin in Utah, USA. It has no fillers due to its natural properties and it blends easily with normal bitumen without separation.

Purpose of GILSONITE modification of Asphalt Pavement Mixtures

• Improved resistance to deformation
• Improved the economic performance of the road
• Improved resistance to stripping
• Improved resistance to fatigue
• Improved durability
• Compensation for poor mix design
• Compensation for poor aggregates

What makes GILSONITE different from other natural asphalts?

• Its high purity and consistent properties
• Its high nitrogen content
• Its high molecular weight
• Its high asphaltene content
• Its high solubility in organic solvents

Where to use GILSONITE

• High resistant base, binder or surface course for heavy traffi
• Toll Plazas
• Airport Runways
• Truck Lanes
• Bus Stops
• Container Terminals

GILSONITE only needs one third of the addition levels normally required for other natural asphalts to achieve the same performance. Considerable cost savings can be achieved by replacing the bitumen with 8-10% of GILSONITE. The minimal sulphur content also means that GILSONITE is a low odour product

Adding AP to RAP

“The use of RAP continues to grow.  Each year new formulations are designed which allow for a greater percentage of RAP to be used in the mix.  The Wetfix range of adhesion promoters have an important part to play in these recipes due to variable aggregate quality and the presence of residual moisture.  Please look at the Wetfix Product Selector Chart which give details of some of the AkzoNobel products available from their UK distributor, Flomac Solutions.  The more active grades such as Diamine OLBS or Wetfix N422 would be an ideal starting point for RAP formulations.”

“AkzoNobel’s Rediset WMX additive has now been successfully trialled on every continent in warm mix formulations.  Using Rediset WMX in warm mix systems will reduce the asphalt mixing and application temperatures while improving the moisture resistance properties of the mix.

Warm mix additive from AkzoNobel

AkzoNobel recently announced an addition to their range of bitumen additives with the development of Rediset™ WMX. This new warm mix system significantly reduces the mixing and application temperatures whilst enhancing the moisture resistance properties of the mix.

Rediset™ WMX comes in a free flowing pastille form which can be easily added to the mixing unit via the Flomac dosing system or to the bitumen, at approx 1kg/t of the final mix. Other benefits of warm mix with Rediset™ WMX include:
